SUMMER 2010 PERFORMING ARTS INTENSIVE
COLORADO SPRINGS CONSERVATORY AND CENTRAL CITY OPERA
AT UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO AT COLORADO SPRINGS

Only 20 of the nations’ most talented and motivated students will be selected for this prestigious and acclaimed summer program
Students room and board at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS)
for 10 days of study and rehearsals.  Classes, workshops and master classes in dance, theater, and musical theater are held on a daily basis.  Students rehearse a theme specific scenes program.  2010 theme is “Through the Eyes of a Child”.  Scenes from productions such as “Hansel and Gretel”, the “Turn of a Screw” and Secret Garden” to name a few will be performed.
The summer curriculum also includes the creation of an original operatic work based on the life of an historically relevant figure to Colorado.  Under the guidance and direction of composer in residence, Mr. Roger Ames, students collaborate, create and perform an original composition.  Public performances of both the original opera and the scenes program will take place in Colorado Springs on Tuesday, July 20th.

The program then culminates in Central City, Colorado at the internationally acclaimed Central City Opera Festival.  Students participate in master classes, workshops and rehearsals with the renowned artistic staff of the festival.  Students see all of the 2010 productions at the festival.  This season includes, “Madame Butterfly” by Puccini, “Orpheus in the Underworld” by Offenbach and “Three Decembers” by Heggie.  Public performances of the student scene program and original opera take place in Central City on July 23rd and 24th.

The Colorado Springs Conservatory was the 2008 “Awards for Excellence” recipient from the El Pomar Foundation.  This statewide award heralds the achievements of the Conservatory to include this nationally acclaimed summer program.   Founded in 1994, the after-school preparatory program has served thousands of young people who desire to study theater and music.  Programs are offered year round for children ages 4 through 19 years.  Conservatory faculty include the finest arts educators and performers from across the front range.  The Colorado Springs Conservatory is proud to have graduated 100% of the graduating high school seniors to 100% of the colleges, conservatories, and universities where students apply.  The mission of the Colorado Springs Conservatory  is to inspire, motivate, and challenge all students to their highest potential as artists and human beings through arts immersion studies  and community arts advocacy participation.

Central City Opera House Association is the nation's fifth-oldest opera company, located just 35 miles west of Denver in one of Colorado's official National Landmark Historic Districts. The company continues to present artistically excellent professional opera in an annual summer festival; to offer career-entry training to young singers; to produce education and community service programs; and to preserve and maintain the Opera House and 30 other Victorian-era properties.

The Central City Opera House was built in 1878 by Welsh and Cornish miners. This National Historic Landmark, centerpiece of the historic gold mining town of Central City, has hosted performances of the nation's fifth-oldest opera company since 1932. Central City Opera's national summer festival attracts patrons from all over the country and abroad to enjoy intimate opera in its 550-seat opera house.  The festival is internationally acclaimed and is host to the prestigious Bonfils-Stanton Apprentice program for young opera singers.  www.centralcity.org
