Colorado Springs Conservatory Semester Programs
The Conservatory offers programs in MUSIC, MUSIC THEATER, and DRAMA
A variety of student programs are performed throughout each semester.
Each program is offered in an age appropriate manner for the following levels; junior 5-7 years, 8-10 years, 11-13 years, and 14-19 years. Small teacher student ratio allows for individual attention. Every enrolled student participates in a core curriculum which includes the following classes and lessons:
Private Study: Piano, Voice, Strings, Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion, Electric Instruments, Guitar, Composition, Arranging
Piano Class: A group session in the Yamaha Digital Clavinova Piano Lab allows each student to study piano at his/her own pace. Curriculum includes repertoire, scales, sightreading and improvisation
Theory/Composition: A group computer lab session where each student is encouraged to participate in his/her own creative process through composition. Within this realm, elements of music theory are incorporated to facilitate immediate application of what are often seemingly intangible concepts. Advanced students study analysis of masterpieces throughout history.
Ear training/ Aural Skills- Ear training through dictation, recall, and interval studies as well as the Robert Starer method of rhythm studies are practiced with conducting skills.
Studio/Performance Class- A group session where each student is required to perform for peers on a weekly basis
Music Appreciation Through Art- A humanities based class where students learn about particular historic periods incorporating visual art, music, literature, and trends. A hands on component may include painting, sculpture, or any other form of visual art.
Music History- An historic study of the great composers throughout history
In addition to the above mentioned classes, jazz students also participate in the following:
Combo Practice- Students learn to play in ensemble of 6 or less incorporating methods and practices used by professionals; chart reading, transposition, styles.
History- Students immerse themselves in any particular period of theatrical history. Reports are given and repertoire studied.
Scene study and performance- Smaller groups study and perform scenes from selected material each semester.
Improvisation- Theater games and activities enhance teamwork and individual skills.
Mask & Mime- History of mask theater as well as elements of mime are worked on throughout the semester.
Tap Dance- Basic and Intermediate elements of Tap as it relates to Musical Theater
Repertoire- A history of American Musical Theater as it relates to repertoire. Selected pieces are practiced and presented in studio performances.
